Warning signs to repair your furnace

Sometimes the smallest of issues can be a part of a much bigger problem. Hence, do not ignore those weird noises or funny smells coming from your furnace. They could be an indicator of a larger underlying problem.

If your furnace is showing any of the signs below, you need to immediately schedule a repair.

1. Your furnace is emitting carbon monoxide.

Being colorless and odorless, it is not always easy to detect a carbon monoxide leak. You must, thus, be on the lookout for a few signs that could indicate a possible carbon monoxide leak. Your furnace should ideally emit a blue flame. If the flame is yellow, there may be a carbon monoxide leak. If you see excess moisture on walls, windows, or other surfaces, it could be an indication of a leak.

Most furnaces come equipped with a carbon monoxide detector. If the detector is off, turn off the furnace immediately and ventilate your house. Call for a professional HVAC company like Lincoln Mechanical immediately to determine the source of the leak.

2. Your furnace was installed more than 15 years ago.

According to the US Dept. of Energy, furnaces should last between 15 to 30 years. If it is older than that, you need to replace it.

As with any other equipment, a furnace also goes through normal wear and tear with extensive use. If you have had your furnace for many years, you need to get it checked out.

3. There is a funny smell coming from your furnace.

Most furnace smells dissipate as the unit runs. However, if there is still a strong smell from your furnace, it could be due to dust inside the unit or a possible gas leak. You need to have a professional HVAC technician determine the cause.

4. The pilot light is yellow.

The pilot light on your furnace usually appears blue. If it is anything other than that, especially yellow, it could indicate a ventilation problem. Call for immediate repairs.

5. Your furnace is not heating properly.

If your unit is not doing its work properly, it is an obvious sign that it is time for repair.
